Agreed...I took a day trip to the Sagit last year and stepped into a great
piece of river right below the Rockport area. There was absolutely no one
in the water, had it to myself - for about 5 minutes. I made perhaps 5
casts, then noticed a raft coming down the river with three guys, teenagers,
14-16 years old I would guess. They pulled their raft in about 20 feet up
river of me, got out, and started fishing right behind me next to shore with
spinning gear. I actually had to stop fishing for fear I would catch them
with a back cast. Somewhat miffed, I turned to look at them and give them
the cold stare. Unfortunately, right at that time, one of them hooked and
landed a 14 inch rainbow not more than 10 feet to my right.

They were so tickled that I didn't have the heart to give them a lecture.
They fished a little more and got back in their raft and away they went.

I am certain of two things. One, I never said anything and therefore they
never had the opportunity to learn the rules of fishing etiquette. And two,
if I had said something, they would now have a lesser memory of the day,
about some guy that gave them a hard time. I suppose, after the initial
aggravation wore off, I got as much fun seeing three kids float the Sagit
(rather than three kids standing in a shopping mall), as catching that trout
myself. I think it is very important to help people be aware of others and
not to impinge about the quality of their own experience. I also think it
is a challenge and an art to do so in a way that makes both people feel like
they are a little taller than they were before. Not sure I can.

Jim

There is still a need to educate people about the ethics of certain aspects
of stream fishing, although there are some who will never learn. I am like
you, I don't need to get into a hassle of holding on stream education.
