I made the hoof yesterday from Seattle up to Whatcom county to hit
Squalicum. It was my first time there, and it was worth the trip if at
least to get back on the water. I headed up at 3:30, was on the water by
5:15 and fished to 8:30. There were a few other fishermen, and was greeted
by sad stories of rain, cold wind, and no fish from a couple of guys just
getting off the lake as I arrived. I had a little better luck than they
did--no rain, and quite a few tugs during the first couple of hours. At 7
or so I brought in a healthy 11" Cut, then an hour later got my only other
fish of the day--a 12" Cut. Both were caught on a #14 caddis beadhead nymph
on a dry line/9 ft leader so I was pretty close to the surface. I left my
sinking tip spool in the car and I am sure that is why the rumored fatty
browns evaded my fly ;). I also tried olive and black Wooley Buggers and a
scud to no avail. There was barely a hatch at 7:15 of tiny midges, or at
least that is what they looked like to me. I saw some smaller fish taking
on the surface, but I did not try for them.

Anyway, good to get back on a lake--it had been since October at Rattlesnake
since I last was in my tube.

Brian
