I'm a trout bigot myself, but sympathize with your quest for bass waters. In visiting the Washington Lakes web site (http://www.washingtonlakes.com) yesterday, I noticed this recent post in the Secret Lakes section and thought it might be of interest to you bass folks:

4-12-00
name = Brandon

I fished a pond in Mill Creek from about 2:00-5:00. Surface temp was 63, air was 67. I was sight fishing to a school of bass with gitzits, grubs, spinners, and crankbaits, but they are getting accustomed to seeing lures all of the time. I managed to pull out a 15 incher and a 19 1/2 incher, both of which were released. I caught them both right on the surface with a blue/pearl shallow diving crankbait. I posted this report as a secret, because this 1/2 acre pond is too small to receive heavy angling pressure. If anyone wants to look for it, though, it's somewhere in the Mays Pond area of Mill Creek (but not Mays Pond itself).

Good luck,

Kent Lufkin

For what it is worth, there is a fishery for smallmouth here on Lake Whatcom
(Bellingham).
I have caught a few "accidentally" while testing flies, lines, etc. in front
of my place, but haven't gotten serious about figuring them out .
Bad news is: There is lots of competition from the full blown bass boat
guys, with contests almost every weekend.
Good news is: They are C&R, complete with the anesthetized livewells (and
200 hp with all the bells and whistles). I have seen some very respectable
fish, both numbers and size turned in at these competitions.
Contact me if you are interested in scoping it out and I will show you what
I know about it.
I have an invite from a former student, who is now on the pro bass tour,
(and apparently guiding on the lake), to blast around with him. Thought I
might go, with a disguise of course, and see if I can figure out how to
apply the fly.
Moore later,
Tom

Ray -- I'll be watching the responses closely too; I'm
just getting started
in bass and pan fishing here in the northwest and am looking
for all the help
I can get. So far Dennis Conrad seems to be the only one
who shares our
interest.
