Dan,
My
experience in Dillon. We stayed at the local motel on the main drag, I
think it was a Best Western. I can find out for sure if you
like. The owner there is a good guy, he will ferry you to or from the
river for $10 if you want to wade. I went in late August and the river was
very wadeable. There is ample public access, Pipe Organ is one spot.
If you want guide and float service, there are three fly shops in Dillon about
100 yards apart from one another.
There
is also an excellent article in the January issue of Northwest Fishing Holes on
fishing the Beaverhead in Dillon. It has pictures of the area, river,
access points, and suggestions. Well worth the $3.00. If you can't
find it I will scan it in and email it to you.
As far
as fishing, the locals told me smaller flies are best (14 - 18). Caddis,
Trico, PMD. Very significant insect hatches at various times throughout
the day. I caught a nice brown on a 14 caddis, a couple of other rainbows
on a 18 black gnat. Color seemed less important. If you didn't have
small flies, you had a long lunch.
