Subject: Rules of Behavior (was: Deer
Creek Fish (Regards to the Stilly))
Thanks, Mike, Kent, Dell ... and to the many others who have
weighed in, reminding us of some common sense rules of etiquette and the
general sensibilities of the vast majority of civilized, decent folks who
comprise this list.
This wasn't a pleasant thing to come home to. I
checked my email, including the list email, this morning before going to work.
When I get home many hours later - after a long day of dealing with spitting
matches I get paid to deal with - I find this vicious thread of name calling
and anger.
Mike summed it up well when he said "One of the things that
makes this newsgroup such a pleasure to read is the lack of flame wars that
are so common on other fly fishing newsgroups. People treat each other with
respect even if they don't agree with what the other has to say." This, /color>simply civilized behavior, is one of
the precepts of this list. I've been around email lists, newsgroups and other
internet venues long enough to know that anger and hatred are poison. I won't
tolerate name /color>calling, flame wars or even just plain and simple rude
behavior, because if I do, I may just as well pull the plug now.
So
let me make a plain and simple rule: Anyone who resorts to name calling,
insults or otherwise egregiously offensive behavior is not welcome here and
will be removed from the list. This will happen regardless of what a
contributions and skills you may offer to the list and it's members, because,
as I've said, this behavior is intolerable. This rule applies whether you
initiate such behavior or respond in kind, because - right or wrong - this
behavior is intolerable. If you take offense to anything said here, feel free
to complain to me, and I'll deal with it as I see best. If you feel compelled
to respond - do so directly, but don't involve the list.
My apologies
to all the list members who were offended by this exchange. I'm sorry, but
there's nothing I can do to ensure that this doesn't happen again. Offense,
even to calloused sensibilities, is a risk you take when you subscribe to an
unmoderated list such as this. And unmoderated it will remain, because I am
not willing to become the editor and arbiter for such a disparate and voluble
group. If you are not willing to risk offense, then you probably shouldn't be
a subscriber to this list, because there are passionately held ideas among fly
fishers and simply being a fly fisher does not ensure they will be civilly
expressed.
So let's get on with our discussions about fishing and
leave this behind. If you have any thoughts or comments about this episode -
or about the policies of the list - please feel free to contact me directly at

Angela, I think most of the list members would agree that your little dispute
should be handled by direct email and not by taking up bandwidth on the
waflyfishers server. > > One of the things that makes this

they don't agree with what the other has to say. Some may find this approach
boring. For those individuals, may I direct you to the Recreation Outdoors Fly
Fishing newsgroup. 90% of their info is flame wars, ego trips or good ol
fashioned BS. I prefer to read about and to discuss fly fishing in the PNW and
would prefer to keep our group focused in that direction. > >
