Spencer, my condolences on your loss. That happened to me back in 93' on
a trip to the Hoh. I lost a lot more than that, however. My truck lost
it's clutch on 101 near the Quinault and I went for a hike to get to a
phone. I returned an hour later to find every piece of camping/fishing
gear stolen from my camper. Twenty years worth of stuff. I learned my
lesson about packing too much stuff for a trip. But there is one other
thing that I can think of can ruin a fishing trip worse than that. A
buddy & I were shot at while on a fishing trip at Concunully back in 93'
(a bad year for me!). For those of you familiar with the area, we were
setting up camp at 1:00am in a meadow between the reservoir & Fish Lake,
when an older rattle-trap pickup came flying down the dirt road about 50
feet from our campground. When he saw our small fire he slammed on his
brakes, slid 25 feet, then backed up and rolled his window down. Then
came five LOUD shots with huge muzzle flashes. My buddy & I ran into the
woods and hid out for a couple of hours until we felt the coast was
clear (we left in such a hurry we weren't sure if the driver got out to
follow us or not). I hid on a hillside crouched behind a tree with a
ridiculous little Swiss Army Knife in my hand. When we returned we
gathered our stuff and drove to the City Park in Concunully. After
placing a Police report in the morning we drove back up and I found five
.44 Mag empties on the dirt road. The sheriff thought it might have been
a drunk poacher - he had been swiveling his spotlight all over the place
as he neared our camp. Pretty weird experience, and it took my buddy & I
a few years to get used to sleeping in the boonies after that. Anyway,
sorry to hear about you losing your stuff and having your window
smashed.
