There is a provincial campground at the east end of the lake on the south
side adjacent to the Sky Hi resort. Take Deadman Creek road which is west of
Savona. The road up to the east end of the lake is about 14 miles up Deadman
Creek road. We go to the Circle W Ranch and they drive us up to their "Home
Cabin", on the north side of the east end, using the same road as Ski Hi and
the provincial campground part of the way then they turn off so I don't know
the complete route to the campground. Ski Hi does have some signs along the
road so that may be adequate.
There is another resort, Hi Hium Resort or Ladowski's, on the west end of
the lake that is accessed from Loon Lake road.
The most successful flies for us this time were Tom Thumb, Humpy, Wooley
Bugger, Caddis Pupa, and Chironomid. The Tom Thumb and Humpy caught the
vast majority of the fish, hatch or not.
I think we fished just about everywhere on the lake except the middle. All
the "islands", coves, bays, and points seemed to produce at one time or
another. Of course none of them seemed to produce at other times.
The fish responded well during wind and moderate rain but a couple of hail
storms put us out of action briefly.
The lake is at about 4500 feet elevation and in some sort of convergence
zone so you can have clouds going three different directions. Weather can be
hot, nice, rainy, windy, and cold all in the same week. We had ice in the
wash basin outside the cabin one morning followed by a fairly decent day.
Rules include; 10 HP max on motors, single barbless hook flies or lures(no
droppers), two lines max. at a time.
'Water Shed' flotant kept my Tom Thumbs afloat through 5 or 6 fish, then I
had to grease the "remains" with Mucilin to keep them floating.
Circle W Ranch has rustic log cabins(no elec. or running water) at several
locations(7 or 8, I think) around the lake and provide a nice stable boat
for each occupant. We take our own motors but they have rentals available.
Very nice people run the Circle W and take care of the cabins.
