Since I don't fish Private waters I can't really comment on this. I can say
this, I don't always agree with conventional wisdom - obviously this is an
example (assuming what you say is true, and I have no reason to doubt you.)

When trolling still waters I use a 10' 4 wt. Lamiglass that is very soft -
basically a noodle rod. Talking about fish in the 4-8 lb range I have a
much better chance of landing them successfully with this rod than my usual
9 1/2 ft. 6 wt. that I use for subsurface fishing. This is especially true
since a strike while trolling can be pretty violent from a large Kamloops.
As to the speed that I can get the fish to the boat the 4 wt. is faster
because I can lean on the fish harder without fear of breaking off. I am
VERY aware of the need to avoid overplaying a fish but I also abhor a break
off.

As I said before, I should have been more specific with my statement about
rod weights. I was much too general. I don't own anything below a 4 wt and
can't imagine any reason for wanting one. But the reason is less because of
fish handling backbone than fly delivery.

Tell then Keith why do many Private waters not let you use anything ligher
than a 4 wt and thats for trout in stillwater not steelhead in moving water.
