Title:

Yes, the WashingtonFlyfishers email list archives have been down since late November, following a disk quota overflow and subsequent lockout from the archiving programs. Unfortunately, I was not notified of the problem by my ISP (Eskimo North, aka Eskimo.com) and did not realize that the archives were broke until late December. The archiving function was restored in early January, but I have not fixed the program that converts the archived messages into HTML format and updates the website, since this may overload my disk quota quickly, causing another lockout.

Tech talk aside, the good news is that development of the *NEW* WashingtonFlyfishers website is proceeding nicely. Kent Lufkin has completed most of the website design and assembled much of the content, a supportive ISP has been found (also thanks to Kent) and list member Sean Ransom is diligently hammering away at the code that will make the whole thing run. We're hoping to have the new site online in a few more weeks and when it is we will migrate the email list function (the list server) to the new site, restoring and updating the online archives at the same time.

Trust me, we're very anxious to get this done. The development team - headed by Kent Lufkin, with the dedicated assistance of Sean Ransom, Leland Miyawaki, Keith O'Leary and myself - have put a great deal of work into developing the new website and we think everyone is going to be very pleased with the results. Both Kent and Sean are top-notch pro's in this field and it shows!  We have received fly-tying and fishing story articles from several list members (and are always looking for more!) and will be showcasing these articles when the website debuts.

We will let you know when we're ready to unveil the new site and will be sure that everyone has plenty of notice when we cut over the email list to the new location. In the meantime, if you have any special fly patterns you'd like to share with the list (along with tying sequences and photo's) or fishing stories (preferably stories highlighting new places to fish or new techniques to use) - or even just photo's of you or other list members fishing - drop me an email at waflyfishers@home.com. Can't promise that we will get you in the 'debut edition' but we will make every effort to post all the materials that we think the list will find useful and interesting at some point over the next few months.

Wes or Dave,

Is the archive down?

It says it was last updated on 11/21/2000.

I'm pleased to announce that - due to the diligent efforts of long-time listmember Dave Miller - the Waflyfishers archives are finally back up and available online at:

http://www.eskimo.com/~wesn/waflyfishers/index.html

Dave was one of the original members of this list and the person responbible for setting up the archives in the first place. Dave is also one of those members who has, in the meantime, become relatively deskbound; obligations of work and family taking precedence over the pleasures of flyfishing. In spite of this Dave took the time to dig into the perplexing problem that had crashed the archives and, succeeding where others (including my ISP) had failed, restored them. Many thanks to Dave!

The archives date back to 1997 and can currently be viewed either by message thread (default), date or author. Regardless of the viewing mode, the message headers are displayed one screen (of about 15 -20 headers) at a time. Select [Prev Page] and [Next Page] at the top of each screen to scroll back or forward through the archives (there are currently 31 pages of message headers). To view a message, just click on the underlined message subject line. Bracketed commands (eg. [Date Prev] ) at the top of each message screen allow you to scroll, message by message, through the entire archive.

Unfortunately, there still is no way to search or filter the archives to display only messages on certain subjects, within a given date range, etc. I'm still exploring ways of doing this, but it may be a while before we accomplish this, particularly since my ISP has lost the staff most familiar with these issues.

In the meantime, please enjoy the archives as they are! We'll keep you posted on any progress we make in upgrading the features and making the message database more useful and enjoyable.
