Kind of an odd morning at Rocky Ford. I arrived at about 7:30 and went
straight to the lower parking lot by the second hatchery. The fast water
below the hatchery already had a couple on it so I took up my favorite
residence on the island right above them.
First cast with a green scud, bang. Nice 18+ inch fish. I thought it was
going to be one of those incredible days with a start like that. The wind
was blowing moderately and it was cold. A few casts later, a large fish hit
and after a decent fight a 24-26 inch incredibly thick and fat fish came to
hand. While releasing him I dislodged an egg sucking leach fly from his left
pectoral fin. A few more cast and I missed a strike. 10 casts later, I was
into another big fish. Unfortunately my line was wrapped around my boots.
Now if you have ever tried to untangle line wrapped around your Sorrel's
while perched a top a mud covered rock and while fighting a fish, you can
understand the fact that I lost that fish. Patrick McManus would be proud of
my moves. Only thing missing to make it qualify for one his stories was dunk
in the creek but I was content to stay dry. Had one more strike and then
things went totally dead. For the next 3 hours, not even a bump. I only saw
two fish taken in this time. The wind never did let up so I decided to head
for home and defrost.
