My buddy Dan and I took our annual trip to Forks to fish for Steelhead
with guide Bob Kratzer last Friday.  There has been little rain and the
fishing is tough.  Since we wanted to do mostly fly fishing, Bob suggested
the upper Hoh and that's what we tried.  We fished several patterns under
indicators and managed only three whitefish the whole day.  Saw one fish
caught on gear and heard of about four others.  There aren't a lot of fish in
the rivers, and the water is low and clear.  We wore out toward the end of
the day and sat for an hour or so just pulling plugs and still didn't touch a
fish.  Bob is an excellent guide, and under normal conditions we certainly
would have had fish.  A couple of the gear guys staying at the Miller Tree
Inn where we were reported catching a couple of fish on the Sol Duc, which is
even lower and clearer than the Hoh.  At least it is still incredibly
gorgeous.  Saw three elk herds on the way up the road to the put in area.
