After reading Mike's report on the St. Joe, I decided to head back to Idaho
Saturday afternoon. I arrived around 4:00 and fished until dark. Started
fishing the riffles (where I caught the 14" last week) and landed five
cutthroat averaging 6" . Unable to coax any larger fish to take my fly, I
drove down river and fished a few more spots catching a few more fish in the
same size range. As dusk approached I was treated to a splashy rise 3'
from me by a large fish. During the next hour I caught 5 fish in the 12-14"
range and a 14" whitefish all on an Elk Hair Caddis. Called it quits when I
couldn't see my line any more. Great ending to a nice evening on the
river.
Question : I thought I saw a large fish (20" +) chasing a small cutthroat I
was reeling in. It was a very long and aggressive lunge that ended with a
large splash near the bank. It happened fast and the light was fading so
I'm not sure if I was seeing things. Any thoughts?
