Your friend should take all his trout gear, tackle and flies. There is alot of different kinds of moving and still water. I live in Bozeman, MT., am here for work during the summer, which is o.k. because anyone who lives in montana knows that summer is the worst time of year to fish, just too damn crowded with tourist's.Summer is time to go alpine fishing. We go back to our beloved waters when you're all gone. I prefer a 5 wt. for the Yellowstone, Snake , Gallatin, Madison etc..I prefer a 3 or 4 wt. for the backcountry spring creeks.
If your friend has never fished Yellowstone, he should buy a book so as to take full advantage of his trip in his alloted time. A good guide book is "Montana Fly Fishing guide" EAST. by John Holt. It will answer all you need.
