It's their Fall issue, the latest. On pg. 66, "Puff" flies. Floating yarn
is more durable, you can "dope" it up. There is an easy way to tie the
parachute patterns that I use. After you have the wing and the tail,(I mix
hackle fibers/zellon for shuck) for the tail.(enables it to float slightly
better with hackle fibers included) Then dub the entire fly body to the
head. Tie in the hackle on YOUR side of the hook, shinny side up and just
take it over to the far side and wrap counterclockwise around the post.
Pull back the post with all the good fibers and drop the hackle pliers over
on the far side of the eye on the last wrap..catch with thread 3 times,
remove hackle pliers and trim, holding back the post; don't worry about
ruining the post, or fibers, they can be returned to position. Finish off.
Then trim the post "fairly" short because when you flatten it with your
thumb it will spread out in a shallow bowl shape. A small drop of "liquid"
fly tyer in the middle of the bowl and you have a very durable, good
floating pattern. I put fly floatant on my thumb and first finger when I
twist the dubbing material on the thread to imbed the floatant in the fly
and give it a chance to soak in before fishing the fly. Some like the
natural materials and use the duck, preen gland feather. If you do, don't
get floatant on it, or it will mat down. It has the natural oils in it. My
pattern comes from Mike Lawson and he has a guide's mentality. Quick to
tie, durable and catches fish. He recommended the counter wrap of the
hackle because when you catch the feather on the final wrap, it further
tightens the feather. Great style and does a job on emergers, spinners,
rides nice and low in the water and YOU can see it. Jere
