Here is what I go with:

For lines I have a floater, clear intermediate , and I just started using a
depth charge sinking line. I feel with these three lines I can cover most of the
water I am fishing.

To go along with the lines I carry a floating pattern (miyawaki beach popper), a
slim baitfish pattern ( basically green on top of white streamer material with a
diamond braid body), and a bulky baitfish pattern to imitate larger herring if
need arises. You should have the slim baitfish pattern in 1 1/2 , 2 1/2 , and 3
1/2 inches depending on the size of the candlefish where you are fishing. The
one thing I have been doing lately is tying my patterns with a stinger hook and
just cutting of the front hook. I have been hooking more fish which I think is
due the tendency for the coho to nip at flies and having a stinger back there
has been a big help. You can also use a shorter shank hook for the stinger with
gives the fish less leverage.

As with steelhead fishing I dont really believe there is a magic fly for coho
fishing. Most of the guys I have fished with all have a different baitfish
imitation and they all catch fish. Just grab one from the Les Johnson book and
become confident with it.

To answer your question I would use the floater first with a popper, then switch
to slim batitfish imitation on the floating line. Still no luck I would switch
to the intermediate line with the slim pattern and then go to the sinking line.
Then I would move to the larger baitfish imitations and work my way back up to
the floating line.

If I was still fishless I would quit fishing and start drinking.
