As the hot weather subsided this week my thoughts turned to best
opportunities for dynamite fall fishing In addition to locating some great
places to try this fall, I also was looking at where to fish over the
winter. (It may be a little premature to dig out the 5mm neoprene waders but
it never hurts to be prepared.)

One of the lakes that aroused my curiosity is a small lake (53 acres) here
in Spokane County called Hog Canyon located 5 miles N.W. of Amber Lake. It
has a limited season from Dec. 1 to Mar. 31. But what I found most amazing
was that WDFW stocked it with 14,000 rainbow last year and 16,000 rainbow
this year. Half of this year's plant was after the season closed. That
seems like a lot of trout for a small lake with winter fishing only. I
figure that it will be a fantastic spot for ice fisherman. Or is it
possible, for those of us that prefer the water to be in a liquid form that
there should be good fishing before it freezes over or after ice out ?

Has anyone ever fished there? I'm curious to know that if the lake is ice
free at the beginning or end of its short season. I'm not willing to trade
my fly rod for an ice auger!

(Apologies if thoughts of winter offends anyone)
