In general I agree. If you know what you want without the input and advice
of the small fly shops then by all means save some money. The majority of
small shops are very friendly and free with advice. I make a point of
paying for their advice by giving them some of my business and recommending
them. I would also have to say that I have been in far too many high end
fly shops, especially in resort/vacation areas, where the staff was very
rude. This inevitably happens because I don't look the part of an
inexperienced dude. They quickly jump to conclusions and I quickly depart.
I think that it is definitely not right, however, to consume the time of the
staff at one of the small shops and test their equipment with the intention
of buying cheap elsewhere. What's fair is fair.
