I took two of my children to the Stilly Saturday afternoon, after a morning
of obligatory yard work. We launched at Boe Road and rowed downstream
towards the tidewater. The pinks had an extreme case of lockjaw, the bite
apparently had been poor in that section all afternoon and we were having no
success. My 8 year old son spotted some fish activity along the far bank,
and we rowed over to check it out.

To our delight we found sea run cutts rising eagerly tight to the bank, and
as far downstream as the eye could see. The insect of choice was a large
burnt orange (cranefly?) that were vulnerable to the trout as they were
oviposting. My son had brought his 5 weight, and we found one lonely yellow
rubber leg stimulator in my salmon fly box - and with that the action was
on!

With Dad on the oars we drifted downstream, my little boy casting like a
champion sending cast after cast next to streamside logs and under
overhanging branches. Even better than his developing casting prowess, he
rose and hooked tons of fish, often 3 or 4 in a row. His little 5 year old
sister, who is not yet old enough to cast, watched from the bow of the boat
and squealed with glee at every fish. I felt like we were living a scene
from a Roderick Haig-Brown novel or perhaps a Norman Rockwell portrait.

The SRC were pretty good size - we must have stumbled on a fresh pod, and
had one of those special days of being in the right place at the right time.

God bless America!

Sounds good Preston. WHen do you think that generally happens--end
of this month/early October? Want to plan the next outing you know...
