I thought I would just let you all know that through your shared information
I was able to have a very fishy evening on the Stilly a couple days ago. As I
mentioned before Ive been working out on Whidbey so I made a stop by the
Stilly on my way home last Friday with the encouragement from all of your
reports. I found some nice water all to myself by Pichuk and although there
were fish proposing everywhere I only picked up one foul hooked fish. It
seemed like I needed to get deeper but I wasnt sure.
Then someone said get deep with lead eyesso I tied up a few more of those
rabbit strip/chenille things from the FFBC site but with eyes. I went back up
on Monday PM and fished the last three hours of the day in the same area.
Wham bam thank you maam! At one point three fish in three casts, and it was
an evening of many fish to hand. Pink worked slightly better than chartreuse.
Looked around a little for cuts and didnt find any of respectable size. I
saw a couple other F-fishers who asked about cuts as well. Im new to all of
this anadromous fishing and although the pinks werent the greatest of
fighters Im curious about folks overwhelming desire for the cuts when the
fishing for pinks is so hot and heavy. Ive had so little experience I can
only assume the reasons from what Ive heard from others.
What Ive gleaned:
- The pinks dont fight overly hard (although a 4#+ fish is heavy on a 6wt no
matter what)
- Cuts hit more aggressively but maybe dont fight much harder.
- Casting to tight holds in lumber and stripping spiders and such is more fun
- Cuts can be caught on dries
- Less people fishing for the cuts.
Ill tell you well seasoned guys one thing; taking on a new arena of
fly-fishing is a blast! Reverting back to a place where I have to ask
questions, explore, use trial and error and more error, and listen, listen,
listen has reminded me of my younger days when it was all a mystery. Back
then I was more frustrated at the mystery but at middle age there is much
more mystic in mystery. Thanks for sharing your experience.
WHATS NEXT?
Have fun
Paul
