For bigger saltwater flies, distance and ease on the shoulder/arm I'll
go for the 8'6" or my personal favorite an 8'9" rod everytime bar non.
They are lighter in weight, plus less leverage when casting so very easy
on the body. I've treid longer rods a number of times and love my 9'
rods in the lighter weights but for heavy weight stuff from 7-12 weight
I like the 8'9" length. I fish salt flats upward of 100 days a year,
wading and some from inflatables and other boats Two places though I do
love the longer rods and that's when fishing the surf with a high rise
beach behind me or when the waves are coming in more than a couple feet
high. Then a long rod excells and at least one rod company has made a
two hander in longer lengths for overhead casting.
