Title: RE: Saltwater Steelies (used to be Let's get a grip)
I usually get on the beach at So. Whidbey State park when I'm fishing silvers and have never walked it in the winter casting to steelies. I think one reason is that it may be closed and is therefore a much longer walk down to the beach. I also feel that fishing near points and along straight beaches, rather than coves like the state park, provide a better chance of intercepting fish.

I usually walk up against the tide while quartering casts downtide behind me. Cover lots of beach and don't grow roots like the gearboys. It'll keep you warm too.

Also, the only other flyfisher loco enough to be out there will be Tom Moore. He likes casting directly into the face of those southwest winds.

Leland.

I noticed if I access at S. Whidbey State Park, I can travel either north or south on the beach. Which way would you recommend I go? Does this stretch of beach have fish, or do I need to position myself exactly on Lagoon Pt. or Bush Pt? Are there any signs to watch for that indicate steelhead, or do you pretty much just cast and hope?

Thanks,
Craig

I don't know about Double Bluff, however, I would think Ft. Casey and the beach south of the ferry terminal (I forget the name) are worth looking at.

Leland.

Do the steelies ever make it down as far as Double Bluff, or would I be better advised to stick around Bush Pt./Lagoon?

Thanks!

It's during the incoming tide. Eat a Big Bubba for me!

Leland.

And let this "Yuppee" thing go!

I fished Bush Pt. this evening . . . nothing.
Talked to a couple local "flyguy's who said there are a few fish around, but nothing real hot.
I am going to be in Allyn, (Leland's landmark:  home of the Big Bubba Burger), for a few days and plan on checking out the Coho's of the Narrows.
Remind me, was it during and ebb that the brat's are snarfing on the surface?
