I enjoyed reading some of the suggestions from the board and I suppose it confirms what I already thought. Westside areas are blown out or closed and about the only thing happening right now is basin area lakes. I am probably going to one of the lakes north of Rocky Ford. I am not sure which one but probably Lenore or Quail lake, I have to check the regs and see if quail is open at this time of year. As for the skookumchuck report, I am submitting this rather sheepishly. I went on Friday for a few hours hoping to get into some late winter run steelhead and didn't quite catch what I wanted to. I saw several steelhead but didn't have any luck until I had a few other anglers watching me. I was the only one fly fishing and they were just kind of skeptically watching me. They could see the two fish I was casting at. I tossed a purple ESL at the fish and it drifted right by without even turning his head. I let the drift play out and as I was taking up slack felt a strike. I set the hook and felt a good fish but knew something was amiss. Couple of head shakes and I knew it wasn't a steelhead. Thirty seconds later I was trying to shake the hook out of a 15 inch whitefish. Just our little secret but my first fish of 2002 was a whitefish. Oh well things can only get better. By the way, I will be driving a red Ford F150 with an Army Ranger sticker and a morning hatch fly shop sticker. Say hello if you see me at Lenore or the Ford.
