Hello all, this is my first try at this. I just got back from a short business trip to Nye, MT and the Stillwater Mine there. Two weeks ago, when I visited the same spot, the Stillwater River was very high due to rapid snow melt in the Beartooth headwaters. Last night I talked to some friends who said the water is down to fishable levels and they are having great luck! 20"ers seem to be the norm. I drove the length of the river from Nye to Columbus this morning and saw only tow people on the whole river!
I plan on driving back the end of the month (can't get away until then) and camp at the FS campground just south of the mine. From there I'll fish the river both upstream by hiking into the Wilderness area, and downstream. I just bought a 7' pontoon boat and will drift it too. I'll let you know how all this works out for my amateur attempts. Dale
