I've been using a loop on my beach poppers for quite a while. I believe it allows a freer swing. I also use it on all my steelhead wets. I tie an improved clinch on the steelhead dries I riffle-hitch, for obvious reasons. I also use the improved clinch on the smallest of trout flies and I used to use them on chironomids when I fished them. The only problem I found with the loop knot was the amount of tippet it takes to tie, particularly on cold winter days.
