I am jacks seething humility. I feel I must offer an explanation to redeem myself, and make myself feel better :)
I work night shift and on Thursday I leave straight from work to fish for the day. I headed out to the Stilly to look for some Steelhead, but had it in the back of my mind that I wouldn't mind snapping a photo of a nice "dolly" or actually anadramous bull trout. During the summer, while fishing for steelhead in this same area, I had caught a fish that my friends called a dolly varden, and that I now know is most probably a bull trout. When I caught the coho, I was so intent on wanting to see a bull trout, I just looked at the reddish color and assumed that's what it was. I was so wrapped up in taking a photo I never stopped to look closely at the fish, or I would have noticed that the fish I caught did NOT have the white pectoral fins that were very prevalent on the fish I had caught during the summer. Call this selective viewing? Aside from that, all the coho I have ever caught have been fresh, so I didn't stop to think it might be a coho. I greatly apologize for my mistake. There are a number of small streams that have what I assume to be Dolly Varden. Kindy Creek, a tributary of the Cascade River has some, as does Downey Creek, a tributary of the Suiattle. Both are streams that have extremely high gradients in their lower reaches, essentially a series of waterfalls. Both of these streams are closed now until June 1st and looking at the regulations, I see that "all freshwater areas are closed to fishing for salmon, Dolly Varden/bull trout and grass carp unless listed as open" so I assume that it would be illegal to target them even when they were open.
