Telling the difference between Bull Trout and Dollie Varden Trout is what is difficult, not bull from brook.

FYI, I posted some photos of adult bull/dollies I caught while searching for searun cutts. There was a definite difference in size from dollie to cutt!

Leland.

It's also extremely rare for bull trout to have blue halos around their spots.
When I lived in BC, I probably caught over a thousand bull trout and never
saw one with blue halos. I have also never seen a bull trout with pronounced
yellow spots, which are quite common in brook trout. Now for the number one
dead giveaway: Brook trout have dark spots and markings on the dorsal fin and
you will never find a bull trout with spots on the dorsal. The photo in
question is without an ounce of doubt, a brook trout.

I wish I had some photos of juvenile bull trout to share. The coloration is
identical to that of an adult fish. Many of the juvenile bulls I've caught
have even had that mean looking extended jaw.

Forgot to say, from what I've been told, the quickest way in the field to
tell the difference between a brookie and a bull trout is to look for the
"vermiculation" along the dorsal area and dorsal fin. The "vermiculation"
are worm-like markings, and are only present in the brook trout, if it's a
bull trout it won't have them...

Subject: Okay, I give. It is not a bull trout parr.

I got contacted offline and I stand corrected.

I now believe that the fish picture is another brook trout
and not a bull trout parr.

All I got to say is that they sure look different here than
in NY.

Can someone post a bull trout parr picture so I know what to
look for next time.

Sheepishly,
