I fished the John Day last year in late June on a 4-day float trip. Patterns that worked well: A variety of poppers, big red and yellow garish foam hoppers, Chernobyl ants, damsels and dragonflies, muddlers, and a mouse pattern that was killer. Clousers were OK. Buggers were slow, although I had been counseled otherwise.

I can tell you more about the John Day offline if you'd like.

I'm planning a float trip on the John Day river some time in the last part
of May or early June. I have been told that poppers and sliders along with
clousers and other streamers are flies to use, anyone on the list have any
experiences they would share.
