Yes, strictly smallmouth. I didn't use a guide. But if you punch in John Day Fishing on Google, you'll get some outfitter Web sites with rates and trip info.

We did a self-supported float. If you're interested in a self-float, I believe you can rent rafts at Service Creek Outfitters. This BLM Web site has EXCELLENT information on floating the John Day.

And this book has great info and maps as well.

Oregon River Tours, by John Garren.

I posted a JD trip report to Waflyfishers, in early July, I think, of 2003.

Dell

I fished theJohn Day last year in late June on a 4-day float trip. Patterns that worked well: A variety of poppers, big red and yellow garish foam hoppers, Chernobyl ants, damsels and dragonflies, muddlers, and a mouse pattern that was killer. Clousers were OK. Buggers were slow, although I had been counseled otherwise.

I can tell you more about the John Day offline if you'd like.

I'm planning a float trip on the John Day river some time in the last part

of May or early June. I have been told that poppers and sliders along with
clousers and other streamers are flies to use, anyone on the list have any
experiences they would share.
