Subject: Re:Steelheading, Commercial posts, Richard's $.01 Summary
To sum it all up in this incredibly long thread I have surmised that:
- It is OK (or not) to tout the services of a particular guide
- It is OK (or not) to mention a particular event
- It is OK (or not) to recommend a particular flyshop
- It is OK (or not) to work at a particular profession associated with flyfishing, or represent a certain flyshop or manufacturer.
Seriously, I look at it this way.
- I think both I, and the moderators, are smart enough to recognize a blatant attempt at advertising.
- I appreciate others sharing where or how to find the services or goods I need
- I think some people are much more sensitive, for whatever reason, to posts than others.
- I greatly appreciate the experience and recommendations of others on this website, and glean a great deal of information from their posts.
- I think I save myself a lot of time, frustration, and money by not trying to reinvent the wheel, or buy useless or incorrect for the task equipment by following the recommendations of others on this site. We all have our individual preferences of course, but the bottom line is the same.
If one were to take the state opposition to "commercial posts" to the extreme, that would rule out discussing any brand of equipment as well. About a year ago, I asked the question about what kind of raingear people used. It started a long string with what I thought was very useful information and I ended up buying a (insert brand here) rain coat from a national manufacturer with which I am most pleased. It was 180 degrees opposed from what I had originally planned to buy before I asked the question. But, if we were to take this to the extreme, we would rule out discussing brands of hooks, rods, reels, vests, etc., etc. And I also appreciate the recommendations to use various guides. Unfortunately there are a lot of guides out there who are less than top notch. I would prefer not to waste money on them, just as I would prefer not to waste money on useless equipment. So I am raising the ante. This is my $2.00 worth.
