Just got back from a week of fishing at Boca Paila (Cancun Mexico area). The weather was very unstable for this time of year, lots of clouds and fairly strong winds. I met lots of neat people including a surprising number that were just as fish crazy as me. Highlights were a 75 year old Swiss gentleman who caught his first permit on a fly after years of trying. He also got a super slam that day. I also enjoyed a group of 4 retired CEO's from California who have fished together for many years and travel the world to flyfish. The youngest was 77 and the oldest was 87. They fished everyday all day, two fished together and the other two fished with their wives. I was amazed at how intense they were at their age, it gives me hope. Four guys from New Jersey were primarily offshore fisherman, but they worked very hard and one of them got two permit on a fly. Personally I was happy to get a 12lb permit on a crab pattern I tied and have a 22 fish day on bones. Most days were much tougher, but I could usually get 7-10 bones a day and I had many shots at permit. During the week there were a total of 5 permit landed on flies by about 15 fishermen, a couple more broken off and probably several hundred shots at permit. These fish are very tough and I consider them the supreme challenge. It takes a combination of luck and skill, with luck being very important, to land one.
