Caddis, caddis, and more caddis was the story for the Yakima yesterday. At
some points the caddis were so thick I was eating some along with the trout,
and in a few spots I was eating more of them. I fished from 9-1:30 up and
down both sides from Umtanum and did pretty well in most spots but a few areas
seemed to have no rising trout at all even given the vast number of bugs. I
caught lots of small fish, a handful of 12-14” fish, one very nice 16”
fish, and lost one just as large. I had one monster fish take but lost him, I
was actually pleased just to have hooked the fish since it was lying underneath
an overhanging bush and I got off a very lucky cast given the wind, he rose, I
set, I felt his weight, saw his big tail flip and then I was wrapped in
branches. I finally lost all the #16 Elk Hair Caddis that I had with me, the
wind had gotten more out of control, and the rain clouds were moving in so I
called it a day, I did still have to get some coding done at some point.
