If you are staying in bozeman, then the gallatin is right there, lots of access in that area. Head up towards yellowstone park, and fish the gallatin canyon, even when there's a drought going the waters are usually cool enough still for fishing.

Having only had limited experience fishing some of the western Montana streams near Missoula, I am really looking for suggestions on rivers I should target, taking into consideration the impact weather conditions and runoff might have on particular bodies of water. Since I have six days to get to St. Cloud, that gives me four or five days to drive through Montana and fish along the way. My first stop is the Missoula area where I have considered fishing Rock Creek if the salmonfly hatch is going on, but I am also intrigued by some of the smaller streams in the area such as Ninemile Creek, Fish Creek and Lolo Creek. Flint Creek is another one but I do not think it opens until later in the summer. As I move towards Butte, I have considered staying there (or heading south towards Dillon) and making a trip to fish the Bighorn or Beaverhead Rivers, but have also heard good things about Poindexter Slough and the Red Rock River. Is Poindexter Slough a creek/stream or is it more like a lake? From there, I will likely head to Bozeman and stay there for a night so any suggestions on streams to fish in that area would be most appreciated. Spring creeks are also high on my list so anyone with suggestions on how to locate/access spring creeks without having to pay a fee to fish them would also me most appreciated. I really have no set agenda or intinerary at this point. I can pretty much fish anywhere I suppose. I do like fishing smaller streams as compared to big rivers, and I will be bringing my pontoon boat along so I can do a day float trip if there are shuttle services available. The Yellowstone parallels I-90 quite a bit and I thought I would fish it some along the way (comments or suggestions about this river would be helpful as well). It might be helpful to note that I will be returning from St. Cloud at the end of July and can take as much time as I want to fish my way back home so any rivers not fished on the way over could be fished on the way back, although the hot, dry conditions and potential low flows of late July/early August might render some rivers unfishable then. I'd really like to head to Yellowstone on my way back and spend a week or so in the park fishing. Comments on that would also be appreciated. Anyhow, this is a big trip for me and I have never made a trip of this magnitude before so I appreciate any help in advance.
