I Fished the Satsop Saturday from Shafer Park down on Saturday.  The chums are in … and so are a ton of fisherman.

I went with two friends and met only one other fly fisherman, who was spey fishing, everyone else was throwing gear.

The gear guys certainly outfished us.  The water was great in color, a little high, but in shape.

Walking and exploring for a vacant run didn’t really pan out for me, no matter how much I bushwacked my way down the river.

To put it in perspective, when I left the last hole, I counted 20 cars by the side of the road.

In a pool where they seemed to be stacked up a bit, I was so concerned about foul hooking a chum that I missed a legitimate bite or two.  Oh well.

I did land a gorgeous 19” cutthroat.  I don’t think it could have held another spot on its body, it was “leopard” like in its spots, and a beautiful slightly golden color to its skin.

I also noticed for the first time … not sure if it was the Satsop race of chums or if I had never seen it before, that the females seem to have a linear dark line down their sides.

For a second in the water, it looked snook like.  I’ll have to look for this impression on other rivers.  Maybe it is the first time I’ve noticed.

Anyway the chums are in the Satsop.  Don’t expect solitude on the weekends.  No silvers yet that I saw.
