I was having a GREAT time with the 3wt! The 5 is more than adequate. Might
work better for you, though, when you accidentally foul-hook one of those old
dogs. I had one head back for the Skykomish and I figured I'd better bust him
off or lose my my flyline, once I started seeing the backing. Not sure how
tight that backing knot was, and I didn't want to risk it...

the 5 wt.

Yep!

I went by All About the Fly, and picked up some mosquito hooks (size 12) and
a package of the orange beads. They liked the orange vs. red or pink. 2
beads on the hook with a BB to get them down, and they were all over it like
white on rice! Unfortunately, the beads kinda blocked the point of the hook
enough that I got a lot more takes than hook ups. And since my fighting
style isn't geared for such soft mouths, I LDR'd an aweful lot of them. But
since the place is lousy with them, the fishing was still great. When I
opened 'em up to clean them, they're just full of orange salmon eggs.

Interesting, I was thinking of doing the same thing, but instead I flogged
the water for something big. Are you pretty much just nymphing eggs under an
indicator?

Ah, I love late fall - Rivers are blown out, furry dead salmon carcasses
stink up the air, and the whitefish start congregating to vacuum up the eggs
laid by the chums.

Since the rivers were still pretty blown out this long weekend, I tried one
of the few tailwater rivers in the area - the Sultan - it was high, but very
fishable. Carefully wading VERY shallow so as not to disturb the existing
redds, I drifted orange egg patterns in the slack water behind spawning dogs
and picked up quite a few whities. Bonked a few of the bigger ones on the
head and brought them home for the smoker.

This is the only meat-hunting I do for finny quarry (I'm a staunch C&R guy)
so you elitists out there, please don't flame me. Anyway, I'm looking to
see if anyone has a good whitefish brine recipe that I could try. I've
never smoked these guys, but I hear that's about the only way to eat them
(though I have to wonder why they wouldn't taste as good as trout, since
they live in the same rivers and eat the same things).

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sean
