Air travel

I'm flying out this weekend and taking my fly rods with me. They are four
piece and in the case they are small enough to fit in my checked baggage. Do
you guys think it's safe enough to do that, instead of taking them as carry
on? They also are the type of cases where the reel can stay on. Though I was
thinking of taking the reel off for flight.
