I wouldn't worry about rods breaking in luggage, as long as they are in a
good case. Frontiers, the outfitters I book a lot of trips with, still says
don't try to carry rods or flies on the plane with you. Some screeners
think they could be used as weapons. Travel outside the US is a special problem.
I just returned from Africa and I heard lots of complaints about inconsistent
security people. I was traveling with guns and also had to deal with the police.
The problem is you can't argue with a screener. If he thinks something is a
problem you will, at the very least, get pulled aside and investigated.
