Uhm, if you can power up your modem while it is stand-alone and only connected to your cable connection and it connects, then this setup is correct. For most situations, the modem needs to be connected to a device that runs software to connect.

Given that the WAMUG archives point to a "a nifty little app" (as described by Peter Hinchliffe) to connect to BPA using Mac OS X, I can only surmise that you need some software.

Not having a cable connection, I can only point to my setup to ADSL, that involves a Linux box with multiple network cards, one is connected to the modem, the other to the hub.

Minds immeasurably superior to mine will no doubt have something to say on the subject.
