I'm going to draw a long bow here ...

If you previously had the cable modem setup working with one of the Macs
connected to it directly, then you would have been using a cross over
Ethernet cable. The machines you have done have the nifty new functionality
of automatically detecting whether to be a xover or not.

So, your problem may be solved if you change the cable connecting the cable
modem to the hub to be a standard Ethernet cable. Or, if the cable modem
has a MDI/MDIX or hub/host switch like my Cisco SOHO77 does, then flick the
switch and see if that helps - same thing as changing the cable.
