Simply put, the beige G3's were too underpowered to handle MPEG decoding, which is VERY processor intensive and an integral part of playing a DVD. The graphics card also plays a big part in it, and thus, the Rage 128 is probably the minimum that could handle it. Even G4's skip occasionaly under OS9. FYI, OSX rocks for DVD playback! If you really want to play DVD's on the machine, jump on eBay and see if you can find an old Wired4DVD PCI card which is a hardware decoder. They don't make them any more, and the company that did have them was consumed by Media100 but the cards are very good and will take the load off the CPU.
