Yes you are quite right in that there are MANY factors to take into account, but a simple question will get you a simple answer (most of the time). FileMaker is simple, FileMaker is tried and tested, anyone can use it and it scales fairly well up to a point. If you want something more beefy, go with 4D. If you want to be silly, go with an Oracle/OpenBase/FrontBase/Sybase databases running on HP/UX or Solaris with a custom built WebObject app or SAP to run the business logic. That¹s kinda getting a bit pricy though... If you want to use free software, use MySQL and PHP. It's not really free though, unless your time is worthless... You answer was very good though.
