Hi This problem sounds similar to one we had quite some time ago. OK so I'm a home user with one machine but anyway here goes..... We have an iMac 333 with OS 8.6 The cure was installing the following firmware from Apple: 'CD Update 2.0'. This fixed the glitch. We received the update as a matter of course from Apple following purchase of our machine in late '99 but I believe it was also on their website.
This may not be new to you of course but it's the only thing I can think of if your problem is 8.6 related. Coincidentally, installing this piece of fimrware also solved a then hiccup with our Epson 440 where the print preview appeared as a miniscule blotch in the preview window and no amount of resetting to deleting fit to page etc would work. No one I've spoken to could explain this bonus effect but it was a happy solution.
