meanwhile the fact that you are having the same problems on 2 computers
SUGGESTS that the problem should be external.
Well you are using 2 different modems aren't you ! ?

I have to pose these questions :-

1. Do you have call waiting turned off. ? ( Dial #43# on your phone )

2. Do you have any phones across your line while you are using the computer.
( Memory phones can drag power from the line and cause disconnects )

3. Do you have a mobile phone ( switched on ) or TV set sitting near your 
computer
?
( Known to sometimes cause problems )

4. Does your phone line ever have clicks or noise ( buzz, hum ) on line ?
