Thanks for the input on my query. It looks like JPEG is the way to go. I have since found some detailed info and hints at http://www.faqs.org/faqs/jpeg-faq/
The task of digitising several thousand of my photos going back through 50 years is going to take a bit of time. Regards Paul.
