Buy a number of removable IDE HDD (preferably a few 7200 rpm with 8MB of
cache ram - though I KNOW 10000 rpm are faster they are apparently less
reliable according to a tech I know. This may be taural faeces.)
IDE Caddies (fugly but functional) can be bought for $35 from places like
PLE in Malaga. The IDE drives are very cheap ($250 for 80 GB $300 for
120GB) and far faster than any alternative. Save your money for more HDD
later or for software.
Anyhow - HDD are more reliable than optical media and much much faster.
Well, That depends. A 160Gb drive that crashes once in twenty years
destroying all data on it may well be less reliable than a stack of
35 DVD-R's where a few of them perish in 20 years...
Also, with optical media it can be cheaper to burn 2 copies and keep
them in separate location than purchase 2 IDE drives.
Have fun,
Shay
