I feel like the 'poor relation' but that's ok, 'cos a problem is a problem...right?
I'm running a Director's Edition PowerPC 5400/180....72 ram, 8gig HD and OS8.6. Everything was running fine sort of and I decided to up to OS9, first thing I noticed was Apple Video Player had lost all sound....not good when I work and watch TV together in the evenings. Then I noticed it wasn't the only application to have lost sound, it seemed that the only sound i had was startup and error. I could be wrong, I was a bit 'annoyed' at this stage. Decided to revert to 8.6 till I could find out what the problem was but since i didn't have 8.6 on CD just 8.5 and upgrade I had to do a clean install and lost some stuff...but that's another story. Right so now I am back on 8.6 and the TV works but i'm having so many crashes and weird characters in my menu bar it's getting beyond a joke. Last night I thought I would try and see exactly what was causing the problem so I restarted the machine and brought up AVP and went to System Profiler to get machine details before I tried opening other applications to see which caused the problems......close system profiler and the weird characters are in the menu bar. [Experience has shown that if I let them stay there things will run ok for a short time then the machine will freeze completely, the only way to avoid this is to force quit the finder] I tried to force quit finder but the thing froze. Restart and this time I decided to avoid the Video player in the hope that it might be to blame, logged onto the net, Communicator 4.7 and ICQ 3.2....all's well for a little while then i want to email some photos to a friend, minimise netscape while i check my files for the right pics using photoshop, quit it and.......yes the weird characters are back in the menu bar. Any suggestions for the OS9 sound problem or the characters other than a tap with a bit of 4x2 Yvonne
