Any suggestions for the OS9 sound problem or the characters other than a
tap with a bit of 4x2

Open the sound control panel and make sure that the volumes for both
system sounds and general audio are turned up, and that mute is
turned off. Also make sure you've selected the appropriate sound
output, being the built in speakers most likely.
