Anybody have much knowledge of extracting video+audio off DVD and
changing it in to .mov format (or any format that can be edited)?
Primarily I need to be able to extract and edit down video+audio from
a DVD or from ripped DVD files on a hard disk to small, 5 minute or
less clips at TV broadcast (not HDTV) quality in .AVI or .MOV
format that can then be used in programs such as PowerPoint or a
vanilla shareware/freeware stand alone viewer (ie Quicktime Player).
Currently I have tried DVDbackup to rip the DVD to hard disk and
Forty-Two to compress entire DVD's in to smaller AVI's but have not
been able to find a free/shareware program that will trim AVI files.
I have tried to use the .MOV function on Forty-Two but the process
always fails with "embedded" audio (where the audio is in the video
file -seems to be usual case for non surround/dolby audio with old
movies and most TV/home video)
Currently testing DVDxDV which produces .mov files (and also will
extract individual chapters of a DVD) seems promising but is
extremely, super, slow compared to Forty-Two and even at higher
quality the artifacting is quite noticeable though acceptable. Of
course with .MOV output means we can trim using most mac editing
programs including old vanilla Quicktime Pro movie player.
FYI:
This is legit educational usage and the Faculty does all the required
paperwork.
