Is anyone else using Nisus Writer Express? Actually, I'm not really using it, as it isn't functional. It takes forty five minutes to open a 500 page RTF document (no graphics or fancy stuff), and that only gives me a blank window. Twenty minutes later I'm shown the copy. Fifty minutes before I could work on the doc! I changed one word and saved it. That took seven minutes. Tried another document of the same size. Same old drill -- the spinning beachball and the Express progress bar (progress?) ad nauseum. Mellel 1.6.5.1 opened a formatted copy of the same file in just over a minute.
I find it hard to believe that software releases, bugs-and-all, have come to this stage where programs are released that are virtually non-functional. Nisus replied to my query: "As you know, Nisus Writer Express is all new, it is not a port of Classic Nisus Writer. It is not like any version of Nisus Writer that has come before. We know, there are features missing at this point, but in time this application will be a lean, clean word processor that will compete with anything out there. "This version of Nisus Writer *Express* is aimed at the 98% of the market that does not use Nisus, that has basic word processing needs, and probably doesn't have a clue as to what Nisus is about. We believe that this group will be very glad to learn what they can now do with an OS X Cocoa word processor. "And, believe me, we are still working on the Nisus Writer that fulfills *your* needs. "At the moment we are hard at work on version 1.1 of Nisus Writer Express. This is a release that will include new features such as a Language Palette, show invisibles, an integrated thesaurus (Nisus Thesaurus, to be exact!), the ability to change the background color, WordPerfect translation and Panther (Mac OS X 10.3) compatibility. There are also the usual bug fixes, and *much faster* performance across the board." Bamboozled, Vlad James
