I note that older G3 powerbooks have a SCSI connector which does not look like the normal one. What is the adapter called to match the normal SCSI cable and what are the plugging/unplugging precautions.

ahhhhh the HDI 30 SCSI adaptor (<http://www.mcpb.com/html/adp.d25xx.hdi.html>)... there was a time when my working day lived or died by if I remembered to pack the HDI 30 SCSI adaptor... now it depends on me remembering the Apple proprietary FireWire cable for my 15 G iPod (which gets it's main work out as an external hard drive) and is at least 1/30th of the physical size of my 8G SCSI drive

SCSI HDI 30 to what ever SCSI pin you need - usually DB25 for scanners or adaptor ended scsi cables the site listed above gives a dozen odd examples of different HDI30 to whatever SCSI adaptors.

should be able to pick them up for under $30 (if they're still around - this ones on the US e-bay <http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2773794450&category=25436>)

as for plugging and un plugging - exactly the same precautions as with tower/desktop systems every thing shut down plug in cables power up. You are s'possed to practice safe SCSI and power everything down before disconnecting devices or connecting additional devices.
