FrankenPuter sadly died yesterday.
FP started as a 333 mHz Powerbook (Bronze) g3. He got an extra 128 meg
Ram (making 192), an upgraded HDD now 10Gig) and about a year ago a new
screen when the original was cracked.
It was running 10.2.8 and 9.2.2. It boots into 9 which is great if you
have to use 9 - much faster than Classic.
Yesterday I performed an emergency open heart transplant over lunchtime
and moved the 20g HDD from FrankenPuter into a more recent G3 clamshell
iBook so I can still work, putting the 10g from the iBook into
FrankenPuter.
Now the quandary. The screen cost over $2000 plus GST (!) so there is
significant spare part value in the computer. I think the battery
(replaced 2 years ago) gets about 1.5 hours. The 128 RAM upgrade should
be fine, the HDD is OK and the keyboard works - although recently the
"fn" button has stopped (so I have the Fn keys permanently activated
through software). To break it up, or to look for a live cpu or
motherboard? Anyone with a diseased Bronze please contact me off list.
